Fotografiska Podcast Live: Space, Art & Science
15th of September 17.30–20.00
Fotografiska turns its gaze to the stars with the launch of its major exhibition “SPACE – a Visual Journey”, opening September 13. At the horizon where art meets science, research intertwines with creativity — capturing the vastness of the universe through the eyes of astronomers and the interpretations of artists. Fourteen artists take on the biggest questions: Who are we in this timeless cosmos, and who even gets to dream about the future?
The third week of September kicks off with a chance to head straight into space — at least through conversation. On Monday, Fotografiska hosts two live podcast recordings exploring space from fresh angles. With inspiring guests, the podcasts open up new perspectives on art and culture, and now, in connection with the exhibition, on science and life in the universe. The talks bring together creativity and scientific thinking, sparking new ideas and surprising connections.
The first guest is American artist and documentarian Mackenzie Calle, whose well-known project “The Gay Space Agency” is also featured in the exhibition. The project boldly confronts the U.S. space program’s historical exclusion of queer astronauts. Celebrating queer identities, it highlights how LGBTQ+ community members have been prevented from flying. Using a mix of original photography and reworked NASA archival material, Calle offers a counter-narrative to astronaut history and imagines a more diverse and inclusive future in space. The conversation with the artist will be held in English.
At 19:00, the second podcast session begins with Andreas Veispak, head of science, development, and innovation at EBS, and formerly with PricewaterhouseCoopers and the European Commission. A history graduate from Oxford University, Andreas has worked across industries, including the automotive sector, before joining the European Commission in 2010. There, he led initiatives linked to European space programs, space data, and research infrastructures. While we usually think of space as “looking up from Earth,” Andreas brings the reverse perspective — exploring space from above, back down to Earth. This discussion will be held in Estonian.
Both conversations will be hosted by Elo Aun, Fotografiska’s beloved and charismatic guide.
