Fotografiska Night Shift: one last final sprint

16th of May 20–00

Lembit Peegel

On the final Friday of Lembit Peegel’s legendary sports photography exhibition “Peegel/Pildis,” Fotografiska's Night Shift will take on a special focus. Tracksuits and sneakers are the dress code—feel free to come straight from your evening workout. The exhibition hall will transform into a lively space with a bar and a DJ. All the stories that have been shared throughout the exhibition will be told one last time, and there will definitely be a few surprises in store.

In short, if you haven’t had the chance to visit the exhibition yet, this is your last chance to experience this unique insight into Estonia’s sporting past. The photos capture an era when smoking was common at chess tournaments and Bruce Jenner performed a somersault long jump at Kadriorg Stadium. People drank Gatorade straight from the can, and trophies shattered on the basketball courts.

“Peegel/Pildis” offers a deep dive into Peegel’s work, showcasing powerful, impactful photos that are a part of Estonia’s sports culture history from the 1970s to the 1990s. As one of the most influential sports photographers of his time, Lembit Peegel's role in the cultural history of Estonia is invaluable. Fotografiska’s exhibition is a crucial step in preserving his legacy, which has not been widely accessible to the public until now. This is Peegel’s first solo exhibition, and it presents many previously unseen images from his vast photo archive. The exhibit features nearly 50 remarkable photographs.

Fotografiska Night Shift takes place every Friday from 8:00 PM to Midnight. During these late hours, the museum takes on a different atmosphere. The lighting is a bit dimmer, the music louder, and the drinks have an extra kick. Conversations around the photos reveal stories that aren’t always shared during the day, and there might even be a few more surprises in store. In the Elliott Erwitt exhibition hall, you’ll also find a lively bar adding to the Friday night vibe.
