Be ready to break stereotypes. How do the LGBT+ movement and its subcultures relate to our social reality? The bear movement, which originated on the west coast of America, has found membership from Europe to Japan and from Australia to Argentina. Initially a reaction to the beauty standards set by the LGBT+ community itself in the United States, bears quickly joined the broader LGBT+ activism.
But what are Estonian bears up to and what are the differences based on their habitat? How do they break myths and build new narratives in Estonia? What role does art play in this? Are there other interesting creatures in Estonia besides bears?
Alvar Ameljushenko
Alvar is the main organizer of the Tallinn Bearty Festival – an international festival for bears, one of the LGBT+ subcultures. The mission of Tallinn Bearty is to stand for equal rights. The subculture festival has been held in Tallinn since 2014, every year in April. The main focus of the festival is on emphasizing humanistic ideas through art – visual arts, music, and cinematography each year provide an excellent opportunity for this with the help of artists from within the community worldwide.
