Squaring The Circle The Story of Hipgnosis' By Anton Corbijn 2022
The artist collective Hipgnosis, founded in 1967 by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, quickly became one of the world’s most influential and innovative groups in album cover and packaging design.
Just as bands of the late 1960s were exploring new musical directions, Hipgnosis sought new ways to visualize music through design. Their album covers were based on photography, but their approach and use of the medium broke radically with established conventions. Whereas album photos had previously aimed mainly to provide information about the artist, Hipgnosis treated the album as an independent work of art.
Hipgnosis’ international breakthrough came in 1973 with the designs for Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy. By the mid-1980s, the collective had designed over 400 album covers for some of the world’s most influential artists, who also appear in the film. Squaring the Circle is Anton Corbijn’s debut documentary.
